Connectivity & travel

Chittagong is connected by air with Kolkata, Bangkok, Dhaka, Doha, Jeddah and Muscat at present. However, flights change time to time.  Therefore, it will be better to ascertain details from travel agents.  At present Regent Airways and US Bangla Airlines operate flights on daily basis with Kolkata.  Biman Bangladesh also operates in this sector. Unfortunately, one has to purchase tickets from travel agents in Bangladesh or Regent Airways / US Bangla Airlines / Biman Bangladesh office in Kolkata as the tickets are not available online.   For traveling to Cox’s Bazar by air one can take flights from Dhaka.  Dhaka is connected with Kolkata with daily flights by Air India, Regent Airways, US Bangla Airlines, Novo Airlines and Biman Bangladesh.  Dhaka is also connected with Delhi with daily flights by Jet Airways.

One can travel by bus from Beniapole (Haridaspur) at the West Bengal border to Chittagong, which is a day’s journey.  From Dhaka to Chittagong is overnight journey by bus or train.  Train journey requires arrangement of tickets well ahead of journey.

All 9 districts in the jurisdiction of Assistant High Commission in Chittagong can be accessed by road.  Buses are available.  Cars can also be hired at rates which are more or less matching with India.

Agartala inTripura is right on the border with Brahmanbaria district.  Akhaura is a major Land Custom Station connecting Agartala with Bangladesh territory.  Akhaura is an important rail station.  In addition Srimantapur (Bibir Bazar) and Belonia are two more Land Custom Station (LCS) which can be used to access Cumilla and Feni districts respectively.

For travel to three districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts (Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban) foreigners require permission from the competent authority in Bangladesh well in advance.  Cox’s Bazar is the most prominent tourist spot connected by bus and car from Chittagong.

Infrastructure is inadequate.  It is advisable to plan well ahead and with help of good travel agents or someone known, particularly if journey is for the first time.
